Pruning

Aside from being more pleasing in appearance, properly pruned trees will normally remain healthier and live longer than neglected trees. In fact, the pruning of trees might be the most important tree maintenance practice you can have.

Pruning is important in order to maintain tree health. We can help a tree develop strong trunk and branch structure by eliminating potential defects while the it is still young. If an arborist is not called in until the tree is older, an attempt to correct the structural defect could injure the tree. Structural defects that will cause future hazards can be removed while the tree is young at a much lower cost.

Trees also can encroach towards buildings, shade light and gardens and be simply too large for their location. A light crown reduction or a crown thin will be a pleasing tree to have in your garden instead of one that you can't live with.

The following are different pruning techniques that Colin White Tree Surgery can undertake for your trees.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches whilst maintaining the tree's natural shape as far as practicable.

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning is the removal of a small portion of secondary and small live branches to produce a uniform density of foliage around an evenly spaced branch structure. It is usually confined to broad-leaves species. Crown thinning includes crown cleaning and does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree. Common reasons for crown thinning are to allow more light to pass through the tree, reduce wind resistance or to lessen the weight of heavy branches.

Crown Raising

Crown raising/lifting is the removal of the lowest branches and preparing of lower branches for future removal. Good practice dictates crown lifting should not normally include the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk as this causes large wounds which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light and give access for traffic. In the UK common practice dictates clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5 m (8 feet)

Crown Cleaning (or Deadwooding)

The removal or dead, dying, diseased, broken, crowded, weakly attached and low-vigour branches as well as climbing plants (e.g. ivy).

Pollarding

Traditionally and still commonly used this term describes the removal of all branches from the trunk. Mature trees that have not been pollarded before are generally not suitable candidates for pollarding due to the large wounds that such treatment produces which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree. A less frequently used definition can mean the regular (annual or biannual) pruning back of small branches to the same point resulting in the formation of a 'pollard head'. Pollarded trees usually require regular treatment of re-growth.

Tree Removal

There are various reasons why a tree may need to be removed; it may be dead or diseased, it may have decay which makes it unstable, or it may simply be growing in an unsuitable location. Whichever it is, we are qualified to deal with the problem, and can remove a tree by one of the following methods with minimum disturbance to people or property.

Tree Felling

The straight fell of trees is the removal of trees as a single unit. Straight felling will be limited to such situations that pose no risk of damage to any property or persons whatsoever.

Trees to be straight felled will be guided by the use of pulling ropes and felling wedges as necessary to ensure the correct direction of controlled fall.

Sectional Tree Felling

Section felling will be used in situations where there is a risk of damage occurring to any property or harm to the public. The work consists of the entire removal of the tree, in sections. If a delay between felling and stump removal is to occur, the stump will be left at a minimum height of 1.5 metres (to ensure it is not a trip hazard).

Section felled trees will be dismantled using the step cut, break off and controlled throw method with the use of lowering ropes.

Stump Removal

Tree removal leaves a stump in the ground which may be unwanted. If we have removed the tree, we will have discussed stump removal or 'stump grinding' as it is known. If the tree has been removed by someone else, you may just be left with an unsightly stump where the tree used to be. Removal is done with a stump grinder and the by-product is chippings which you can choose to keep or let us remove.

Hedge Maintenance

Many gardens contain large hedges which owners or gardeners are no longer able to maintain due to their size. We have all the equipment and skills necessary to carry out such work, whether it involves climbing inside the hedge or pruning it from the outside using a ladder, platform or even a hydraulic platform (cherry picker).
